Symbol Quest
The Path
The journey of exploration begins from a description of the goal as shown in 'About'. It continues here with a map of the entire route to be taken.
We continue in 'Experience' with a description of the experiences of art that inspires this work.
How may these experiences be explained? We then turn in 'Theory' to Yoruba and Hindu Tantric ontology and theories of perception for guides, illuminating and evoking these theories through the art of Osi Audu, inspired by Yoruba ontology, as I also draw on the art of various Tantric artists motivated by Hindu Tantric thought and art.
How is our process of enquiry to be characterized? This process is both described in its combination of contemplation, analysis, synthesis and expression and visually evoked by the contemplative art of Uche Edochie and Joseph Eze in 'Method'.
In 'Method', we begin our journey by penetrating within our central visual metaphor, the concentric rectangles symbol of the Ekpe society.
Entering into the successive platforms of the rooms of signification of the semiotic space constituted by the square enclosure, we begin by considering relationships between visual form and meaning, between symbolism as embodiment and concealment and symbolism as revelation, in the context of relationships between exoteric and esoteric knowledge.
The journey begins in earnest with engagement with the art of Victor Ekpuk in Labyrinth.
